Year 6 Food Technology

1 November 2020
Image of Year 6 Food Technology

Year 6, your mission is to research and find a healthy savoury dish including meat and vegetables that can be made at school and divided between 8 children.

Each person will need to take a portion home with them.

We will vote on the best 4 and make each one over the next 4 weeks.

You will need to list your ingredients and provide prices for each item.

Good luck!

2 skinless chicken breasts , cut into strips ££1:50
1 lemon £0:65
1 tsp dried oregano (optional) £0:45
1 garlic clove , crushed £0:45
pinch of cinnamon £0:45
1 tbsp olive oil £1:75
4 flatbreads £0:69
4 tbsp Greek yogurt £0:45
¼ red pepper , finely chopped £0:42
1 Little Gem lettuce , finely chopped £0:69
Put the chicken in a bowl. Pare strips of zest from the lemon using a vegetable peeler, then juice the lemon too. Add the peel and half the juice to the chicken, along with the oregano (if using), garlic, cinnamon and oil. Mix well, cover and chill for an hour. The lemon juice will start to ‘cook’ the chicken, so don’t leave for longer.

Heat the barbecue. If you are using coals, wait until they turn white. If you are indoors, heat a griddle pan. Thread the chicken strips onto a couple of metal skewers to stop them falling through the grate (you don’t need to do this for the griddle), then grill for a couple of mins each side. The strips will cook through quickly so don’t leave them too long. Season if you like.

Warm the flatbreads on the edge of the barbecue (or on the griddle) for a minute, then transfer them to plates and spread each with ½ tbsp yogurt. Divide the chicken strips between them, then dot on the remaining yogurt and sprinkle over the pepper and lettuce. Fold or roll the flatbreads to eat.
Ingredients prices were sourced from aldi and the spices are for the whole jar.

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan or wok. Add the onion and soften for 5 mins.

Add the smoked paprika, thyme and paella rice, stir for 1 min, then splash in the sherry, if using. Once evaporated, stir in the chopped tomatoes and chicken stock.

Season and cook, uncovered, for about 15 mins, stirring now and again until the rice is almost tender and still surrounded with some liquid.

Stir in the seafood mix and cover with a lid. Simmer for 5 mins, or until the seafood is cooked through and the rice is tender. Squeeze over the lemon juice, scatter over the parsley and serve with the lemon wedges. Once you have done that, You could put salmon, cod or shrimp in to the pan and mix it in

300g paella or risotto rice
3 tbsp dry sherry or white wine (optional)

- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 large tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp harissa

Meatballs and spaghetti

4 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
500g minced beef
50g chopped spinach
1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs
50g fresh breadcrumbs
1 medium free-range egg, beaten
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (optional)
Tomato sauce (find our recipe here) and pasta, to serve

Heat half of the olive oil in a large, deep-sided frying pan. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes until soft and golden. Transfer to a large bowl and allow to cool.

Add the beef, chopped spinach, herbs, breadcrumbs, beaten egg and seasoning to the bowl and stir well, to combine. Using your hands, roll the mixture into 24 even-sized balls.

Heat the remaining oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and cook the meatballs for about 8-10 minutes, turning every couple of minutes.

Serve with Tomato sauce

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

4 garlic doves, finely chopped

1 tablespoon dried mixed herbs

2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes

Freshly ground black pepper

Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic and mixed herbs, stirring occasionally until soft, about 2-3 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bring to the boil.

Turn down to simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 10-15 minutes.

Tip: This freezes well for up to 1 month in an airtight container. Allow to cool to room temperature before freezing.

Serve with your favourite pasta.
