Dear Year 6 Parents, 4th September 2019
Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 6. Mrs. Gomersall and I are looking forward to the new term and we have already planned many activities for the children.
Firstly, a few practical points:
Mathletics homework will be sent out weekly starting from week commencing 9/09/19. I will set 4 units to begin with which need to be completed by the following Monday morning. There will be a Monday lunch time homework club (12.00-12.30pm) for those who have not completed work set.
Spellings will be sent out on Monday and the test will take place on Friday afternoons. The spellings are available on the blog.
It is vital that the children know their times tables therefore I will give the class ten minutes every morning to work on their arithmetic, including tables. However, in order to perfect their tables they must still spend some time EVERY day learning them. I have talked to the class about finding a good way to learn their tables – it could be on an APP, Interactive Resources website, being tested by an adult, colourful posters etc.
We would be really grateful if you could enable your child to read as much as possible. This is crucial in order for them to cope with the high demands of the reading SAT in May. We recommend twenty minutes every day at home. Diaries need to be signed by you and will be checked on Friday mornings.
PE – every Tuesday and Wednesday for this half term. Children need their full kit including trainers as we are concentrating on sportshall fitness and teamwork until the half term holiday.
Our science topic this half term is Inheritance and Evolution. We are also studying: Biographies, Food Technology, Computer Coding, Blackpool – history and geography of a seaside town and our first R.E. topic is Love. Our novel for this term is ‘Running Wild’ by Michael Morpurgo, it will be beneficial for your child to have their own copy of this book. We also have copies available.

I have planned a trip to Blackpool for the class on Tuesday 8th October. We will visit the zoo and have a lesson organised on adaptation and evolution. We will also visit the RNLI centre on the seafront and draw images of the north pier and tower for our art project. More details will follow.
In a couple of weeks, we will be holding our opening evening, I look forward to seeing you there.
I will also have parent/teacher meetings towards the end of October to discuss progress.
